Procedure Log:

5/29/05: Looked on website and identified the different aspects of this assignment and once I made the class website I proceeded to create the bibliography page. I then identified a lesson plan from my classroom teaching that would fit the criteria of the assignment; it is called "Technology Debates." I then took the lesson plan, the design brief, the rubric and the topic list and converted them into an html document so I could post it to my site. I then went to the class website and copied and pasted the rubric to my site.

6/3/05: Modified my site to include a home button

6/7/05: Worked on getting the subject headings from OCLC, Amazon, and GIL. Wrote part of the reflection.

6/8/05: Filled out the rubric

7/5/05: Started looking up sources for annotated bibliography

7/20/05: Finished annotated bibliography and finish reflection

Title:Your children are under attack: how popular culture is destroying your kids' values and how you can protect them / Jim Taylor.

Location: PINES

Description:Popular culture used to reflect the values of America. No longer. Now it is a voracious beast of materialism, celebrity and excess that shapes those values to meet its own greedy needs. Every day your children are bombarded with sexually explicit music, violent movies and video games, shock radio, Internet chat rooms …the list goes on and on. You know this onslaught hurts your kids, and you want to do something to protect them. The reality is that your children’s defense against popular culture starts inside your home—with you! In Your Children Are Under Attack, psychologist and national parenting expert Dr. Jim Taylor exposes how and why today’s popular culture is destroying your children’s values. Popular culture takes the most despicable values—avarice, selfishness, gluttony, intolerance, deceit, and many others—and makes them admirable, all to sell more products to unsuspecting children.

He explores their history from the legendary creations of the ancient Greeks to the experimental ultra sensitive machines of today. Title:Technically speaking: why all Americans need to know more about technology / Committee on Technological Literacy, National Academy of Engineering, National Research Council ; Greg Pearson and A. Thomas Young, editors.

Location: PINES

Description: This book is actually the culmination of over 2 years of research by the National Research Council on technological literacy in the United States.  The sad truth is that although we are utterly dependent on sophisticated technological systems to maintain our way of life, as a nation we are ignorant of the functioning of those systems to an astonishing degree.  This report makes the case that everyone involved in education needs to do a better job of educating students about how the technical world around them works. The book provides firepower to those who have been advocating for additional technical education and a wake up call for those who have not.

Title:The Internet galaxy: reflections on the Internet, business, and society / Manuel Castells.

Location:  PINES

Description: Castells, best known for his three-volume study The Information Age (Blackwell), an analysis of societal changes wrought by communications advances, trims that work to appeal to readers who were daunted by its 1,200 pages, $80 paperback price and ponderous prose. In this excellent, readable, nontechnical summary of the history, social implications and likely future of Internet business, Castells, professor of planning and of sociology at Berkeley, covers institutions like the World Wide Web Consortium, which "presides over the protocols and development" of the Web, and phenomena like the Internet's immense ability to simultaneously liberate and exclude. There are still too many sentences like "It is fair to say that most hackers live normal lives, at least as normal as most people, which does not necessarily mean that hackers (or anybody else) fit into the ideal type of normalcy, conforming to the dominant ideology in our societies," leaving readers wondering if hackers' lives are normal or not, and whether he's trying to give a sociological side lesson. Those willing to overlook such prosodic lapses will appreciate the astute accounts of, e.g., the complications for early grassroots online citizen networks headed by community activists, but seen by many as an opportunity to move beyond their local community.

Title: RAP'S BAD REP by Charisse Jones Times Staff Writer

Location: SIRS Knowledge Source: LOS ANGELES TIMES (Los Angeles, Calif.) May 2, 1993, pp. E1+

Description:"During her Senate testimony about media violence in September [2000], [Lynne] Cheney didn't flinch while naming those she believes are polluting American culture with intolerable filth and vulgarity....She attacked one of the biggest-selling recording artists around, rapper Eminem....What Cheney and a host of other critics either won't or can't acknowledge is that Eminem is not merely a bestseller; he's also one of the BEST pop artists of his time. He's an unparalleled verbal wizard and a master of his chosen art form: the provocation." (REASON) This article explores reasons for Eminem's popularity. The author argues that "THE MARSHALL MATHERS LP is a sophisticated, though profane, meta-pop meditation on [Eminem's] relationship with his fans and his responsibilities toward society," and that "Eminem's Slim Shady character captures perfectly the feelings of outrage and powerlessness that often accompany--indeed, perhaps define--adolescence."

Title:Copyright for teachers and librarians / Rebecca P. Butler.

Location: PINES

Description:Although the title seems to limit the audience, this handbook is aimed at the general K-12 audience, including students. The first few chapters examine essential concepts, including copyright law, fair use, public domain, obtaining permission, and other issues such as interlibrary loan and photocopying. The next chapters focus on specific applications of the law relating to the Internet, music, multimedia, and distance learning, to name a few. The final chapter attempts to identify the meaning of copyright for the K-12 audience. Key sections of the law are reproduced in appendixes. Butler makes excellent use of flowcharts and uses an informal writing style. There are many grey areas regarding copyright, and no book can clarify them all, but among its other uses, this guide would be a good starting point for discussions with legal counsel. • Automobiles- hybrid

Title: Forward drive : the race to build "clean" cars for the future / Jim Motavalli.

Location: PINES

Description: Few consumers have been attracted to "clean" cars--those powered by something other than traditional internal combustion engines--because they aren't satisfied yet with critical factors such as appearance (too odd), cost (too high), dependability (too uncertain), and performance (too limited). The times they are a-changing, however. A host of catalysts, including new legal requirements and shifting public opinion, is finally driving automakers toward relevant alternative technologies that actually date back 160 years. And Jim Motavalli, who travels an unusual professional route as both syndicated auto columnist and environmental reporter, chronicles the buildup and potential payoff in his intriguing book Forward Drive. "The information I came across ... described a personal transportation revolution that was becoming tantalizingly close," he writes. "Here, at last, were vehicles that promised to not only greatly reduce pollution but also to perform better, be more reliable, cruise farther, and last much longer than anything the public had ever seen." Written for those "who'd somehow failed to get their engineering Ph.D.s," it absorbingly examines the history of such vehicles, the impact of gasoline automobiles, the pioneers who already utilize alternative power, the large and small R&D operations, the political and financial forces under which everything operates, and the broader picture of sustainable transportation.

Reflection:

The first part of this assignment was essentially done already. When I was a classroom technology teacher I created a lesson plan that fit perfectly with the assignment criteria. The lesson consisted with students choosing a technologically current topic and designing an argument based on research. They were required to have 3 resources and 1 of them had to be a physical resource (book or article). I created a topic list and gave the list and my lesson plan to our media specialist and requested a cart with any and all books our library had on them. The new information I had to discover for this project was the Sears Subject Headings that corresponded to my topic list. I found that this exercise was very helpful and if I had known the correct topics finding the original list for the class would have been easier. My media center, when I was teaching, was quite small, but it contained very valuable resources considering my topics were very specific and had to be current. I attached the list I originally worked with and also added some sources from online databases that were even more up-to-date. Unfortunately, the original list did not include book descriptions I did have to spend much of my time compiling an annotated bibliography that differed from my original list. This assignment really opened my eyes to all the possibilities a media specialist has to impact the classroom in a very positive way and to provide tangible aid to the teacher.
